Many celebrities have spoken out against President Donald Trump, but ESPN's Jemele Hill found herself in hot water with her employer after calling him a white supremacist on Twitter.
Fans like to spout "stick to sports," especially with the protests started by Colin Kaepernick, but Hill decided to speak out against the real estate mogul turned politician in a series of tweets. The tweet storm was initially in response to an article tweeted by The Hill about Kid Rock’s rejection of being labeled a racist because he used the Confederate Flag at concerts.
"He loves black people so much that he pandered to racists by using a flag that unquestionably stands for dehumanizing black people," The Hill tweeted.
The Hill's Kid Rock tweeted spurred hundreds of responses from users on both sides of the political spectrum, which eventually resulted in a discussion on the president.
"Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists," she tweeted.
"Trump is the most ignorant, offensive president of my lifetime. His rise is a direct result of white supremacy. Period."
"He is unqualified and unfit to be president. He is not a leader. And if he were not white, he never would have been elected," she continued.
Her tweets triggered a response from conservative media outlets including the Federalist, the Daily Caller, and Breitbart, which claims that ESPN would've fired her if she were a conservative and said such a thing about a liberal politician. Former reporter Britt McHenry claims she was laid off because of her conservative views, though she had other issues including a rude expletive tirade that was caught on camera at a tow yard. Also Curt Schilling, an outspoken conservative voice, was fired by the network last year for making insensitive social media posts about transgender people and a meme comparing Muslims to Nazis he posted on Twitter.
As for Hill, ESPN issued a statement on the matter concerning the SportsCenter host.
“The comments on Twitter from Jemele Hill regarding the President do not represent the position of ESPN,” the network said. “We have addressed this with Jemele and she recognizes her actions were inappropriate.”.
