As Miami-Dade County prepares for one of the most destructive hurricanes of all time, the race to safety has begun, with hundreds lining up to get into a shelter. Hurricane Irma has already devastated the Carribean, destroying almost 95% of St. Martin and leaving the island of Barbuda virtually uninhabitable. This comes in wake of Hurricane Harvey, which completely devastated the Houston area on its way to becoming the costliest natural disaster in American history, greater than that of Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina combined.

Thousands of people are being evacuated out of South Florida, but there are not enough evacuation centers to accommodate all the displaced residents. Authorities have already warned that the storm is larger than the state of Florida and mandatory evacuations have been put forth. People have already been waiting for hours to enter the shelters amidst the heat of Miami. Irma is set to hit the Florida Keys within the next few hours.

Stay tuned for more updates.
