Common will be joining the cast of Fox's adaptation of the Black Lives Matter YA novel, The Hate U Give.

The film centers around 16-year-old Starr who grew up in a poverty-stricken slum but now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shot her unarmed best friend, she's caught between two different worlds as she tries to speak her truth. Common, who is currently nominated for an Emmy for his musical work on Ava DuVernay’s 13th, will be playing the role of a police officer and Starr's uncle.

The coming film also stars Amandla Stenberg with Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall, and Algee Smith. The film is being directed by George Tillman Jr. and is based on Angela Thomas' debut novel. The film is set to begin shooting in Atlanta in September.
