Kenneth Luis was shot and killed by police last night at the Nickerson Gardens in Watts. Luis was standing by a car on Slater Avenue when police began to approach him and he ran. Police stated that the situation looked suspicious because the car was facing the wrong way and there was a man in the driver's seat.

When Luis began to run into the housing complex, deputies shot at him and he was hit at least once. Later on, Luis, in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

It is still unclear why the police started chasing him and what prompted the gunfire. The sheriff made the following statement: “handgun believed to belong to the suspect was found at the scene.” But witnesses claim that the victim did not have a gun or any weapon of sorts. Another witness took an Instagram video of Luis on the ground, on his side after he was shot.

The story is still developing as the Homicide Bureau continues to investigate. We will keep you all posted as more information comes about.
