The Atlanta Falcons are taking their chances on Devonta Freeman to lead their ground game into the future, as the organization confirmed on Wednesday [August 9] that he's agreed to an offer that makes him the highest paid running back in the NFL.

Barring an extension, Freeman was set to play out the remainder of his rookie contract, before testing free agency in 2018. But Atlanta thought better than to risk losing their two-time Pro Bowl back, choosing instead to tack a five-year extension onto his final year that will infuse the $1.8 million he was set to make this upcoming season into a deal worth $41.25 million. Factoring in $17.3 million fully guaranteed and $22 million in guarantees, Freeman will average $8.25 million per year, which edges out the $8 million LeSean McCoy is making with the Buffalo Bills each season. Freeman will also receive a $15 million signing bonus.

Over the past two seasons, Freeman has surged to become one of the league's top backs, despite splitting the workload in a two back system. In 2015 he broke out as a versatile threat when he registered 73 receptions to go with 1,056 yards on 265 carries. Last year he passed his 2015 yards total on fewer carries and continued to prove himself as a pass catching back with 54 receptions for 462 yards.

"A young boy from the bottom. You put that work in & stay humble, you'll be rewarded. All glory to GOD Now we just gotta go get the trophy!" Freeman tweeted, upon the deal being made official.
