After completing the scam, loss prevention stopped Wilde as he attempted to leave the store. According to police, Wilde ran off to the exit dropping the car seat holding his daughter in the process. Once outside the store, to avoid capture, Wilde handed off his daughter to a stranger and drove off.

Police quickly caught up to Wilde, and he was arrested. Lacey Dawn Christenson, who was in the Walmart with her additional three children, was arrested on an outstanding warrant. While in jail, a woman watching the couple's pets contacted authorities after finding drug paraphernalia. Police obtained a warrant and found drugs items in many areas of the home. Police found the crushed pills of the drug Suboxone, and the couple admitted to giving the drug to their newborn to hide effects of drug addiction. As police investigated further, it was later found that the infant child tested positive for methamphetamine, heroin, and morphine.
