At an On The Border restaurant in Cordova, Tenn. a couple left a white server a message on a receipt saying, “we don’t tip white people, lol.”

CBS affiliate WREG Memphis interviewed Brandy Sciara, the friend of a white server named Nathan Bergeron as she talks about the how she found out about the discriminatory message left on the receipt and the struggles he has been going through.

“I was absolutely devastated and so sad for him,” she said. “I’ve seen Nathan, he’s counting his dollars and trying to add it up to see he got gas to got to work the next day. He’s not gonna tell you how it really makes him feel. He’s just gonna be hoping he’s got a couch to sleep on the next day.

Sciara tells WREG that after Nathan sent the photo of the receipt he told her that the couple were seemingly nice and that the boyfriend may have wrote it. It was not reported exactly what race the couple was.

Sciara posted the receipt on Facebook with intentions of receiving words of encouragement, but the outpouring of sympathy from friends on social media resulted in a GoFundMe that allowed her to raise $1,115. Much more than their original goal of $500.

“I feel like this happens a lot and more than what it should, whether you’re black or white or young or old. You don’t have to tip if you don’t want to but to not tip because you don’t like how somebody looks it’s not right,” Sciara said.
