A Queens man named Aitabdel Salem is suing the city along with his attorneys because they did not let him know that his bail was reduced. According to the NY Daily News, Salem spent five months in the Rikers Island facility before finding out that his bail was literally one dollar. Salem was arrested in 2014 after he was accused of attacking a police officer who was trying to cuff him for an alleged theft. Salem's bail was set at $25,000 but he was eventually ordered to be released after prosecutors could not get an indictment for the police officer attack accusation.

Salem had two other charges for mischief and tampering against him, which were lowered to $1 by a judge, but the man did not learn of the reduced bail issued until five months later. Salem's lawsuit says "Mr. Salem implored corrections officers within the facility to tell him what happened on his respective court dates. None of the corrections officers told him that he was ordered to be free on November 28, 2014 because his bail had been reduced to $1."
