CNN was forced to retract a story on Donald Trump and Russia that resulted in the resignation of three journalists on it staff this week, thereby giving the President an opening to trash the intentions of the free press concerning his administration. Thus it was no surprise when acting Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders used the fiasco to bash the media before the reporters filling the West Wing, during the White House's first televised briefing in a week. But one particular journalist wasn't having it.
Just as Sanders steered off into a tangent in which she cited various instances of shoddy reporting, the voice of the Sentinel's Brian Karem began projecting from the right-hand side of the room. Sanders, who had been in the middle of pleading that the press re-evaluates the nature of its coverage, gave her ears to Karem, as did the camera crews and the rest of the reporters on hand.
“You’re inflaming everyone right here right now with those words,” Karem said. He asked why journalists would dare to intentionally mislead the public when their jobs depend on the integrity of their work on a day to day basis. He then drew a contrast with administration officials and how they are not as expendable as those who work in the news industry are, before pointing out that as elected servants of the public it's the job of Trump and folks in his cabinet to answer questions.
“What you just did is inflammatory to people all over the country who look at it and see once again the president’s right, and everybody else out here is fake media, and everybody in this room is only trying to do their job,” said Karem.
