For the second time in 9 months, vandals have destroyed a Mississippi memorial sign for Emmett Till.

"Who knows what motivates people to do this?” Allan Hammons, the spokesman for the firm that produced the memorial said.

According to Hammons, in May, someone scratched up the marker, but over this past weekend, most of the images and wording peeled off. In October, a separate memorial had been destroyed by bullet holes. The timing of the desecration comes after it was revealed in January that Carolyn Bryant Donham, the woman who sparked the killing of Till fabricated her story.

Emmitt Till was only 14 years old when he was violently killed and dumped in the Tallahatchie River. The pair of white men, who claimed they committed the murder because Till made advances to a married white woman, were acquitted by an all-white jury. The images from his open casket funeral were the catalyst for many in the African American community to push for civil rights.

The cost of repairs is estimated to be around $500. Police have yet to name suspects.
