In an incident being called "extremely unfortunate" by the local sheriff's department, a 17-year-old boy was fatally wounded after a shot meant for his dog skipped off the ground and struck him instead.

The tragic shooting occurred Thursday while sheriff's deputies were responding to noise complaints at a house party in Palmdale, Ca.

According to NBC Los Angeles, one responding officer was bitten on the knee by the teen's pit bull. The boy then restrained the dog and took him to an area behind the home.

As the bitten officer awaited an ambulance, the dog got loose and again charged at police, two of whom opened fire, the sheriff's department said.

At least one bullet ricocheted off the pavement and struck the young man in the chest. He was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital where he died.

The dog reportedly survived and was taken to animal control, according to news station KTLA.

"It's what we're calling an extremely, extremely unfortunate incident at this time," said sheriff's captain Christopher Bergner in a press conference.

The department's homicide bureau is investigating the fatal shooting.
