Less than one week on the job a rookie MTA bus driver suffered what could wind up being the worst day of her career on Wednesday, June 21, as she's sure to remember how a mindless blunder would cost a number of New Yorkers thousands of dollars worth of damage, and nearly take one man's life.

Several cars were wrecked, as was the front of a local church after a bus came plowing down Palmetto Ave. in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The 20-something-year-old driver had apparently parked and gotten off of the bus without realizing that she had left the ride in neutral. She would only realize what she had done when the massive vehicle began to roll backward, leading to a desperate chase to regain control of the wheel.

A couple of bystanders recorded the incident and witnesses watched in shock as she screamed for assistance. But the bus would only come to a halt when it crashed into and mangled the front gate of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, after totaling several cars along the way. One man, Nicholas Rivera, had been working on his BMW when the impact of the bus slamming into him sent him some 10 feet away.

Both Rivera and the driver would be taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center where they were treated and released.
