Police arrested a suspect they believe to be responsible for the murder of a 17-year-old Muslim girl who was beaten and abducted while on her way home from breaking her Ramadan fast with a late night meal on Saturday, June 17.

Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, was apprehended shortly after investigators discovered the body of 17-year-old Nabra Hussein in a pond in Fairfax, VA at around 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. He is reported to have been followed and stopped by officers who spotted him in relative proximity to the scene and found the way he was driving suspicious.

Hussein had reportedly been strolling away from a local IHOP when the man believed to be Torres pulled up in a red car and began shouting insults. A dispute would ensue between her and the suspect, and within moments he got out of his vehicle with a baseball bat in hand, prompting Hussein and some of the girls she was traveling with to run. To her fatal misfortune, Hussein would trip over an abaya garment her mother gave her to wear, thereby giving the suspect an opportunity to beat her and carry her away.

Hussein's murder has shaken the Muslim community in Fairfax and drawn cries from citizens nationwide who have become increasingly concerned about the rise in hate crimes in recent years.
