Opponents of Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke have reason to exhale this week, as it was reported over the weekend that he has withdrawn his acceptance of the position atop the Department of Homeland Security.
Clarke reportedly met with Trump in Wisconsin early last week and discussed what roles might be more appropriate for him to fill in pushing Trump's agenda forward. According to the Sheriff's advisor Craig Peterson, Clarke sees himself as better suited to take on a more aggressive law enforcement role. Exactly what role that may be is unclear seeing how the Director of Homeland Security position would have afforded him leadership over customs and border protection, the Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration and the Secret Service.
Clarke's announcement that he would be leaving his Sheriff's post to take over the DHS in June became a reason for concern for critics who cite a record of abuses he is currently in court over concerning the treatment of prisoners in jails that operate under his jurisdiction, and his rhetoric towards dissenters. Clarke is noted for having blamed Eric Garner for his own death during a Congressional hearing and came to notoriety thanks to his attacks on the Black Lives Matter movement, whose members he's called terrorists and "subhuman creeps" who he'd endeavor to eradicate.
