Tragedy struck Memorial Day Weekend on Sunday [May 28], when a Navy SEAL fell to his death while carrying out a stunt before onlookers in Jersey City, New Jersey.

A crowd of Fleet Week tourists and locals were on hand to take in a skydiving demonstration at Liberty State Park when one of the SEAL's elite Leap Frogs team members went plunging into the Hudson River, after failing to properly open his parachute. The victim, who would later be identified as Remington Peters, was recovered from the waters by the Coast Guard and the Jersey City Fire Department, but couldn't be revived. He was pronounced dead at Jersey Medical Center at around 1:10 p.m.

Video of the incident was captured by WABC-TV and shows the part of the parachute Peters cut himself loose from, with the intention of avoiding landfall, as it floats into a parking lot nearby. Peters was 27-year-old.
