New Zealand racer Scott Dixon will likely get a crack at his second Indianapolis 500 title since 2008, ten years from the date in 2018, but it won't happen this year. The four-time top-five Indy finisher's hopes came to a crashing halt on Sunday, May 28, when he and compeititor Jay Howard collided between turns 1 and 2.

The wreck ensued after Howard met the wall in turn 1. The bump caused him to careen out of control towards the low side of the track where he was rammed into by Dixon, who's car then went airborn, before landing on the safety barrier. Footage of the crash shows as the vehicles shatter apart, thereby taking both men out of the race.

Both men underwent a brief check up but were not injured in the accident.
