The discovery of a dead federal prosecutor on a Florida beach this past week has raised questions as investigators search to uncover the circumstance and motive behind what appears to be a murder.
Beranton J. Whisenant Jr.'s 37-year-old body was found sprawled out by the shore of Hollywood Beach on Wednesday, May 25. According to CBS Miami, he was recovered from the water and dragged to dry land before being covered by a sheet. While no arrests have been made, and police have yet to determine whether there was foul play involved, authorities confirm that Whisenant appears to have died from a gunshot wound or some other form of trauma to the head.
The murder of a federal prosecutor is extremely rare. Following the slayings of a pair of Texas attornies in 2013, executive director for the National District Attorneys Association Scott Burns said that records had at the time accounted for only 13 such killings occurring over the past 100 years. Whisenant worked out Miami's U.S. Attorney's Office, with a focus on such immigration-related crimes as visa and passport fraud.
A number of users on Twitter expressed skepticism in regards to Whisenant's death, including attorney Elizabeth Lee Beck, who tweeted: "Unsolved death. This is in the SAME COUNTY as #dncfraudlawsuit & the judge. call on Hollywood, FL PD to solve it!"
