In what's no doubt a harbinger of what we can all expect in the near future, a robot police officer has gone on duty in Dubai.

While the robot cop can't make arrests (yet), people will be able to report crimes, pay fines, and get information via a touchscreen on its chest.

Dubai hopes to replace a full 25% of its police force with the robot police by 2030. However, there will still be plenty of human officers around to take care of more complex matters.

"We are not going to replace our police officers with this tool," said Brig Khalid Al Razooqi, the director general of smart services at Dubai Police.

Currently, the robot can only communicate in Arabic and English, though plans are in place to add Russian, Chinese, French, and Spanish as well.
