A contaminated batch of nacho cheese sauce claimed the life of one of 11 people around the Sacramento area who was hospitalized after consuming the product. Martin Galindo-Larios Jr., 37 fell ill after eating the Valley Oak Food and Fuel gas station purchase. According to health officials, his cause of death is contributed to a botulism outbreak.

There were at least 10 others who showed symptoms of the outbreak between April and May, prompting the product to be removed from shelves. Galindo-Larios is reported to have fallen into a coma in the weeks after ingesting the outbreak causing toxin. As the days went by his condition worsened, with respiratory complications forcing him to breathe through a ventilator before he became non-responsive to hospital staff and visitors.

In a statement delivered through a GoFundMe page set up to support Galindo-Larios's family through the tragedy, he is noted as having been the home's breadwinner and explains that his wife and children have fallen into emotional, physical and economic distress since his passing. "We are asking friends, family, anyone who can help out the Galindo family during this hardship we would greatly appreciate it," the statement reads. The funds raised are thus far approaching $20,000.
