Prior to the start of the 2017 Billboard Music Awards telecast, it became easy to project that Drake would have a good shot at eclipsing Adele's record 12 trophies, when he was announced the winner of 10 early awards. Sure enough, the early success was a sign of things to come, as the top artist, top male artist and top rap album honors would put him past the British singer with 13 total awards.

Cameras snapped photos of Drizzy as he wrestled with carrying the near dozen golden microphones. Among the early awards he accepted were two given to him in recognition of the sensational year he enjoyed on the charts in 2016, including one for one for top Billboard 200 artist and another for top Hot 100 artist. The wins signify him besting the field in more than half of the 22 categories he was nominated for.

“I want to say, hold tight Adele, because when a new thing drops you’ll be back to get the record back,” Drake would tell his audience of industry peers, while receiving the record breaking award.
