Hours before game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals Friday (May 19), the NBA announced the three finalists for MVP, and too much surprise four-time MVP Lebron James was snubbed.
Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and Kawhi Leonard will compete this year for the top basketball honor. Despite having a season were, he averaged career bests in rebounds, assists, and 3-point percentage the Cleveland star was left off the list.
A case can be made for each of the three finalists, Westbrook set the triple double record; Harden averaged 29.1 ppg taking the Houston Rockets from 8th place in the Western Conference last season to 3rd place this year and Kawhi helped the lead the Spurs to a 2nd place finish in the West winning 61 games.
However, Lebron is taking the news in stride, dismantling the Boston Celtics Friday with 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting, leading the Cavs to a 130-86 victory. The winner will be announced June 26 during the NBA’s first awards show.
