President Trump reportedly bragged to Russian officials visiting the White House that he fired "nut job" James Comey as F.B.I. director, adding that it took pressure off of the investigation. This is according to a document summarizing the meeting between Donald, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak earlier this month.

An American official read the document to the New York Times, which quoted Trump as saying, “I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job. I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.” Trump then reportedly added, "I'm not under investigation."

A second official confirmed the memo to the Times, and White House press secretary Sean Spicer reacted to the memo leaking to the press. He stated, “By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia’s actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russia,” Mr. Spicer said. “The investigation would have always continued, and obviously, the termination of Comey would not have ended it. Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations.”
