Chris Cornell, lead singer of the rock groups Soundgarden and Audioslave, died Wednesday night in Detroit. He was 52.

Cornell performed at Detroit's Fox Theatre earlier Wednesday night. According to one of his representatives, his death was "sudden and unexpected."

"Full set with an encore. Nothing odd. Outstanding performance," Bill Lowe of Port Clinton, Ohio, said.

A statement from Cornell's representative reads, "His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause. They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

Update: Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, said that Cornell was found with a band around his neck. He would not confirm that the death was a suicide, but the preliminary determination was an "apparent suicide."
