A trade Boston made with Brooklyn four years ago paid off in the 2017 draft lottery on Tuesday night, May 17, with the Celtics taking home the #1 overall pick.

Fans will recall Boston's blockbuster move to rebuild when in 2013 they shipped Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry and D.J. White to Brooklyn for Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, MarShon Brooks, Kris Joseph, Keith Bogans and three first round picks, along with the right to swap picks in 2017. Were it not for a trade the Nets made with the Wizards in February they wouldn't have even had a first round pick, which goes to show where the Celtics would have been at had they not had the ability to swap for an opportunity that worked in their favor.

With Boston now having first dibs on such talents as Markelle Fultz or Lonzo Ball, they find themselves in a position to add to their already marquee squad with another young franchise player, or even with a solid veteran should they wish to ultimately trade whomever they grab up. The Celtics are battle tested as it is, having surpassed Lebron James and the Cavs to finish the regular season atop the Eastern Conference with a 53-29 record. It'll be interesting to see how they'll look to strengthen a team that has a solid foundation with the likes of Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder and Al Horford.

Coming in second in the draft order was Boston's historic rival L.A. Lakers. They were followed by Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Sacramento to fill the top 5 picks respectively.
