The release of surveillance footage that shows a violent bullying incident having taken place only days before an 8-year-old boy committed suicide gives look at why an Ohio coroner has reopened an investigation into his death.

The mother of Carson Elementary School 3rd-grader Gabriel Taye was under the impression that her son had fainted after she was contacted about him losing consciousness in the boy's bathroom, on January 24. The school's assistant principal reportedly found the boy laid out on the floor and sent him to the nurse. Taye would be sent home early that day, but never was it communicated to the staff or administration that he had been the victim of an attack. It wasn't until later on that evening, when Taye complained of stomach pains, that Taye's mother discovered something might be wrong, but a trip to the hospital resulted in a stomach flu diagnosis.

Two days after the incident, young Gabriel Taye was found hanging in his bedroom.

It wasn't until video taken at the scene was reviewed by detectives, that Taye's mother learned the magnitude of the grief that was weighing on his chest in the days leading up to his suicide. Should the coroner amend Taye's death certificate, the case would be sent to the state's prosecutor's office. A homicide detective that was interviewed by the Cincinnati Enquirer decried the attack the recording captured as one that "could even rise to the level of criminal assault," for the boy seen slamming him up against the wall and some of the other students, who step over, mock and kick Taye.
