The US and North Korea have not been seeing eye-to-eye in terms of diplomacy matters, and during an Oval Office interview, Trump said that a major conflict with North Korea is a possibility unless both parties can come to a diplomatic understanding. He said, "There is a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with North Korea. Absolutely." The president did note that he wanted the scenario to play out peacefully, but also said: "We'd love to solve things diplomatically but it's very difficult." This comes after the Trump administration said: "North Korea is an urgent national security threat and top foreign policy priority."

Trump spoke about how North Korea posed a major challenge for him. He was asked if he thought Kim Jong Un was rational and responded with, "He's 27 years old. His father dies, took over a regime. So say what you want but that is not easy, especially at that age. I'm not giving him credit or not giving him credit, I'm just saying that's a very hard thing to do. As to whether or not he's rational, I have no opinion on it. I hope he's rational."
