A naval reconnaissance warship that Russia had stationed off of the coast of Turkey as a part of it's Black Sea Fleet went down after it went head to head with a Togo-flagged boat on Thursday, April 27.

The collision happened around 20 miles north-west of the Bosphorus strait, when during an onslaught of fog and low visibility, it failed to avoid contact with the Youzarsif H shortly before noon. Three hours later the Liman, as the vessel was called, had sunk, with Russia's defense ministry later reporting that it had sustained a hole. Thanks to members of the Turkish coastguard, all 78 crew members were brought to safety. None of the Youzarsif boat's crew members were hurt either.

The Liman has been navigating the Black Sea with radio and sonar equipment ever since February, when in a testy move Russian President Vladimir Putin sent it to observe NATO's Sea Shield exercises.
