According to an autopsy, Hernandez tested positive for a synthetic form of marijuana called K2. Reports noted that traces of K2 showed up during a kidney fluid screening. Because of this discovery, the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center was raided by the state police and placed on lockdown as state troopers and Tactical Teams searched for any type of contraband. This also included paper soaked with K2 according to Newsweek.

Aaron Hernandez's death is still under investigation, allegedly pulling Internal Affairs into the mix. Because of this, sources believe a larger investigation into the prison is taking place. Anonymous sources in the Department of Correction told Newsweek that it is unusual to go through with an SBCC prison search. They also said that since Department of Corrections Internal Affairs is present, this is an indication of a full-blown investigation set to take place. One correction officer was recently "detached with pay" after he was accused of not being present for a surveillance round at 2 a.m., one hour before Hernandez took his own life.
