In July 2016, Mary J. Blige filed for divorce from Kendu Isaacs, formerly her husband of 12 years. The split occurred because of "irreconcilable differences." Earlier this year, the singer aired out some reasons behind the filing for divorce during an interview at Power 105.1 with Angie Martinez, saying, "overwhelming disrespect" played a part. She went on to say, "I can sense that I'm not what you want anymore because now you start throwing questions around like, 'OK, why don't you cook?' ... 'Why don't you wear your hair like this?' I never wore my hair like this before, what's up with you?'”

Now according to court documents, Blige is claiming that Isaacs spent $420,000 on his new girlfriend. Isaacs claims that the money was used for "travel expenses." Initially, Isaacs asked for $110,000 per month in spousal support. The court documents also state that Isaacs allegedly demanded that Blige "support his kids from a previous relationship." Blige responded to that, saying, "I am not responsible for supporting (Martin's) parents and his children from another relationship which he lists as ongoing monthly expenses."

Blige also noted that since Isaacs does not help keep up their property, their estate is "underwater" for $10 million. A rep for Mary J. Blige told the NY Daily News, "Ms. Blige is saddened to say it is true that she has filed for divorce, saying, "sometimes things don't work how we hoped they would, but there is a divine plan and a reason for everything."
