On Wednesday, March 29, news broke of shots being fired near the Capitol building in D.C. after a 20-year-old woman named Taleah Everett rammed into a U.S. Capitol police cruiser. The incident took place around 9:30 A.M. when a woman was seen driving recklessly along Independence Avenue, and would not stop her car for police.

This was after the woman became frustrated with slow-moving traffic in the area. From there, Everett's actions were described as her doing an "erratic" and "aggressive" u-turn. The police deemed the incident a traffic stop that did not go according to plan. Reports noted that the woman behind the wheel slammed her car right into a police cruiser that was attempting to stop her. From there, the woman allegedly tried to run over police officers who were on foot in the area. Because the woman tried to run them over, this prompted officers to open fire. Capitol Police Communications director Eva Malecki gave a statement, saying, "During the attempt to arrest the suspect, shots were fired. However, no individuals were injured during the arrest." After a couple of minutes, the driver was arrested a few blocks away from the scene.

Taleah Everett is being questioned by the police and will face charges that include assaulting a police officer. Police have not described a clear reason behind the woman's attack, but have noted that this was not a terrorist attack, saying "this incident appears to be criminal in nature" but there is “no nexus to terrorism.” The Capitol building is still currently open to the public.
