Mexican smugglers brought in a 26-year-old mother to the United States and held her against her will for two and a half years. She was intended to be a surrogate for a 47-year-old woman who promised to pay $3,000 for her arrival but failed when she attempted to impregnate her with her boyfriend’s semen. She reportedly was forced only to eat beans from a can.
The woman, Esthela Clark admitted to police that she was responsible for smuggling the 26-year-old woman to the U.S. due to the fact she was unable to conceive children in 2012 and 2015 despite having adult children of her own in Mexico and the United States. In 2012, she hired the kidnappers to bring the woman by way of a bus from Piedras Negras in Couahila into Texas. She was sent to Jacksonville, Clark’s residence, by smugglers and picked up by Clark and her family in 2012.
When the victim stayed with Clarke, she was forced to live in shockingly brutal conditions in a small one bedroom apartment and was often tortured. Daily Mail reported that she was inseminated up to four times a day, was forced to have sex with strangers and to “keep the condoms” for insemination purposes, made to sleep in puddles of bleach and was often beat with a metal stick, and was forced to wash their car while half-naked in cold weather.
The victim could work; however, Clark took all her earnings. Eventually, she was rescued by a member of their church and informed local police.
In court on Monday, Clark pleaded guilty to forced labor with prosecutors and has yet to be sentenced. However, she faces up to 20 years in prison or deportation if prosecutors can prove she entered the country illegally.
