While sporting a huge smile on her face, a science teacher in Lockhart, Texas turned herself in to police custody this past Monday after a warrant was issued for her arrest for allegedly having a sexual relationship with one of her underage male students.

Police tell The Houston Chronicle that Sarah Fowlkes, 27, turned herself in at Lockhart Police Station after responding to the warrant. She was booked and processed into the Caldwell County Jail where she now faces charges for having sex with a 17-year-old male.

On March 10, the police were reported after a school official from Lockhart High School informed them that a potentially inappropriate relationship between the science teacher and the young male may have been occurring. After holding an investigation, police not only discovered that Sarah, who is also married, and the 17-year-old’s relationship was sexual, but they frequently communicated both in person and via text.

Lockhart Independent School District has since suspended her and reported her conduct to the State Board for Educator Certification.

In a statement from Superintendent Susan Bohn, she informed parents that Lockhart High School contacted both Child Protective services and the police.

"Lockhart parents entrust their children to us every day, and it is something we do not take lightly. Student safety is the district's most important priority," she says. "As soon as we learned of the report, we acted swiftly to involve law enforcement and CPS to conduct a thorough investigation. The district does not and will not tolerate any improper communication or contact between a teacher and child."
