Prison guards at the Dade Correctional Institution in Florida will not be held accountable for the 2012 death of Darren Ramey, who was forced to stand in an 180-degree shower for hours. According to reports, the guards said Rainey had smeared feces on himself in a dirty protest, and he was sent to the shower, where the temperature and locked entrance/exit are controlled by a guard.

Inmates say the scalding hot showers were used as punishment inside of the prison, and some say they could hear Rainey pleading to be let out the night he died. After two hours inside, the 50-year-old man was found lying face up in 3-inches of water with no pulse.

A nurse claimed that Rainey suffered burns to 90 percent of his body, and added that his skin was falling off at the touch. Medical examiner Emma Lew said Rainey's death was likely a cause of schizophrenia, heart disease, and confinement in the small shower area. She added, “It is not substantiated that the temperatures inside the shower room were excessively high.”
