Reality TV show actress and former Playboy model Ariane Bellamar is finding herself under fire from followers on social media, who've have taken exception to her comfortable use of the N-word. Bellamar was called out by activist April Reign after she came across a tweet sent out by the former Beverly Hills Nannies star, in which she used the slur to criticize political analyst Van Jones.
“Why is @VanJones68 always playing the house n****r?! He is smart. Able. Ready. Stand up! Don’t settle for this undefinable nonsense. #RESIST,” Bellamar wrote. It is unclear exactly what about Jones her remarks were in reference to. The former Obama administration environmental adviser is the most liberal of CNN's panel of correspondents, although he has been attempting to reach across to conservatives via his show "The Messy Truth," and recent comments, particularly his praise of President Trump's State of the Union address, has turned some of his core supporters against him. Nevertheless, her liberal use of the phrase isn't being tolerated by many, regardless of Jones' politics.
In going back and forth with followers who sought to check her for her language, Bellamar attempted to defend her right to say the word, citing volunteer work she has done for Black Lives Matter. At one point, she brought hip-hop into the dispute, pointing out how she most commonly finds herself using the word when singing along to rap songs. “@ReignOfApril Furthermore, Drake would whack me if I skipped it in front of him. He’s the musician. He’s not offended. That’s his choice,” she told Reign.
Reign, who the public came to know following her initiation of the #OscarsSoWhite protests of 2015, fired back, stating, "You can be married to a Black man and still be a racist. Your volunteering doesn't absolve you or give you the right to say the N-word." She then advised Bellamar to skip the word when she comes upon it in a song from here on out.
