Common defended OG hip-hop peer Snoop Dogg amid controversy over visuals depicting a satirized shooting of President Trump, on Thursday, March 16. The conscious rap legend gave a positive spin on Snoop's "Lavender" video, saying that freedom of expression has always functioned to challenge power in hip-hop.

"Hip-hop has always been about, you know, freedom of expression. That's one of the most powerful things. Hip hop has been, like, a voice for so many people," Common said, pointing out that he had just been listening to an old school joint in which KRS-1 goes at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. "If you go think about the days of Public Enemy and you fast forward to Kendrick Lamar, like, hip-hop artists have always been speaking up and saying what they feel," he said.

Common's position on the matter comes one day after Snoop took to social media to address the backlash he has faced. In a video posted to Instagram the legendary LBC rapper fixed his voice into an Australian accent and simply scuffed: "I've got nothing to say, mate."
