The Cleveland 911 dispatcher who took the call that led to the fatal police shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice has been suspended for 8 days.

The 911 dispatcher, Constance Hollinger, allegedly violated protocol by failing to tell police officers that Tamir had been playing with a toy pellet gun. Cuyahoga County prosecutor Timothy McGinty cited that omission as a crucial detail that ultimately influenced how the responding officers, Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback, responded to the call.

According to McGinty, Tamir Rice might still be alive today if the dispatcher accurately relayed the information to the officers.

Loehmann and Garmback, who did not face criminal charges, now face possible disciplinary action.

Last April, the city of Cleveland settled a federal civil rights lawsuit with the Rice family for $6 million.
