"Gary from Chicago," the man who became a viral sensation when, as his Academy Awards tour group was unknowingly led into the Dolby Theater, he told host Jimmy Kimmel that he was ignoring the white celebrities, has a movie-worthy backstory.

The tourist, Gary Alan Coe, told ABC 7 Chicago that he served 20 years for multiple felonies, and had been released just three days before he made his Academy Awards cameo. Coe said he found god and his fiancee, with whom he appeared at the ceremony, while behind bars.

Coe served his sentence in California, but is originally from Chicago, Illinois. "I'm a Chicago boy," he told ABC 7. "That's my town."
