On Monday, former President George W. Bush said the media is an essential component of American democracy. The former president made an appearance on the Today Show, discussing the role of the media in the context of the Trump presidency.

"I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy," Bush said, "We need an independent media to hold people like me to account. Power can be very addictive, and it can corrosive, and it's important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power."

The comments from Bush come a few days after the White House barred a series of news outlets, like CNN, the NY Times, and the LA Times, from a press briefing.
