The Trump Administration rescinded Barack Obama's landmark guidance Title IX that allowed transgender students use the bathroom of their choice. The change was praised by the transgender community as a step forward for their civil rights.

Trump argued that the guidelines, which were put on hold by a federal judge after it was issued last May, be up to the discretion of states and public schools. The news sparked protests outside of the White House, with people waving the rainbow flag and yelling, "No hate, no fear, trans students are welcome here."

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos commented on the new decision, saying it was needed to "protect every student in America and ensure that they have the freedom to learn and thrive in a safe and trusted environment." She added, "This is an issue best solved at the state and local level. Schools, communities, and families can find — and in many cases have found — solutions that protect all students."
