A Whittier, California police officer was killed Monday in a shootout while responding to a traffic accident, according to the California Sheriff's Department.

Officer Keith Boyer, who had served with the department since 1989, had recently been talking about retirement, according to chief Jeff Piper.

"He was the best of the best," said Piper in a news conference Monday afternoon. "He was a personal friend of mine for over 25 years."

Boyer and another officer were responding to a traffic accident Monday morning when the suspect opened fire, killing Boyer and wounding the other officer. The suspect, only identified as a 26-year-old man, was also wounded. He's suspected of being involved in a murder that happened earlier that morning in East LA.
