According to the National Post, the man who originally owned the television hid the money away so his parents wouldn't find it. He later forgot about hiding the money and gave the television set to a friend. The friend then gave the set to the recycling center, where the large sum of money was found.

While the employees at the recycling plant had no commitment to give the money back, they tracked down the original owner who is said to be “relieved and ecstatic” after being given his forgotten stash.
