Migos were swift to retract statements they reportedly made during a Rolling Stone interview, in which they chastised fans' show of support for iLoveMakonnen coming out of the closet, on Wednesday, February 8. "We love all people, gay or straight and we apologize if we offended anyone," the Atlanta collective tweeted just after 5 p.m. It was hours after the Rolling Stone articles release and headlines quoting them as calling his decision to publicize his sexuality "wack" had already been multiplying by the time the group took to social media in an attempt to defuse any backlash over the interview.

"We are all fan's of Makonnen's music and we wish he didn't feel like he ever had to hide himself. We feel the world is f***ed up that people feel like they have to hide and we're asked to comment on someone's sexuality," Migos' statement reads.

The tone of Migos' response and the explanation given contradict the comments they were purported to have made during the interview. According to the write up, the publication's reporter had steered their conversation towards the topic of Atlanta's musical diversity. But he write's that he was surprised by their seeming unwillingness to embrace the sexual diversity Makonnen's decision would signify for the ATL scene. "Damn, Makonnen," he quotes Quavo stating, after what he described to be an awkward interlude. "They supported him?" he is then quoted as asking, before allegedly stating, "That's because the world is f***ed up." The Migos lead man is then reported to have declared that he doesn't mean to say there is anything wrong with being gay, but does see it as conflicting with past accounts of trapping and selling drugs, in terms of street credibility.

In their response, the group maintains that they were not addressing his identity as a gay man, stating, "We have no problem with anyone's sexual preference."
