Last year, the Dakota Access Pipeline became the center of national news as protests began over the land and the lasting environmental effects the pipeline would leave. The construction of the oil pipeline was under fire due to its proximity to an Indian reservation, which would have long-lasting effects on the local water supply. Furthermore, the construction would disrupt the sacred burial grounds surrounding the reservation.

In December 2016, Barack Obama blocked the Dakota pipeline, but now reports have surfaced saying that Donald Trump signed an executive order for the Dakota Access and Keystone XL oil pipelines to continue. His reasoning was to give more workers in the U.S. access to jobs through this motion.

While in the Oval Office, Trump said "From now on we’re going to be making pipeline in the United States. We build the pipelines, we want to build the pipe. We’re going to put a lot of workers, a lot of skilled workers, back to work. We will build our own pipeline, we will build our own pipes like we used to in the old days.”
