Less than 48 hours after his capture double homicide suspect Markeith Loyd appeared in court for the first time on Thursday morning, January 19. A bandaged Loyd remained surrounded by policemen, two of whom were restraining him by the biceps throughout his hearing. While he never exhibited any physical resistance, Loyd continued to complain about having been beaten by his arresting officers and became especially aggressive when it became clear that Judge Jeanette Bigney wasn't trying to hear it.

Loyd began to amplify his protest after the conditions of his detainment were being read out. He would take exception to being charged with resisting arrest. "They done took my eye, they done broke my nose, broke my jaw," he responded, before asking how it is that he could have been resisting when he crawled to the officers on his belly so as to avoid any assault. That's when Bigney cut him off to request that he be removed from the court, concluding that there was nothing more to add to the proceeding. Loyd responded by telling the judge, "Lady, f*** you."

Loyd was arrested after eluding capture for over a month, ever since the murder of ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon on December 13, which he is accused of executing. On January 9 the 41-year-old suspect was nearly apprehended when Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton approached him upon receiving a tip of his involvement in the slaying. Loyd reportedly opened fire on Clayton, leaving her dead at the scene before leading Deputy Norman Lewis on a chase that ended with the official losing his life in a fatal crash.

Within hours of police having located and closed in on Loyd, news outlets covering the story televised him accusing the police of brutality as they escorted him into a precinct. Loyd would spend 21 hours in the hospital, where he was treated for a fractured eye socket. Aerial view footage of the arrest that had been taken from a helicopter has been released to show that he sustained the injury from a kick to the face, while he lay belly down on the ground. Police charge that he had refused to place his arms behind his back, thereby warranting the resisting arrest charge.

Loyd's arrest was an emotional one for the officers involved, who are reported to have obtained the late officer Clayton's handcuffs prior to heading out, and subsequently used them to make the arrest.
