Hundreds of protesters from the LGBT community marched to Vice President-elect Mike Pence's D.C. residence late Wednesday [Jan. 18], where they set up shop for an event dubbed the "Queer Dance Party at Mike Pence's House."

The caravan of rainbow flag-waving activists congregated at the Friendship Heights Metro Station at around 6 p.m., from where they would set out their way to their final destination, into which Pence and his wife moved after the general election in November. The Pence family were said to be out with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and company, but none the less, a heavy presence of police security were on hand to oversee the demonstration.

Pence has been decried by gay rights activists and their allies over to his combative record on LGBT issues. As recently as 2015, Pence (who was Governor of Indiana back then) legislated against civil liberties protections in his state, when he signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which enabled private businesses to refuse customers services that conflict with their religious beliefs. Critics say the Act has resulted in discriminatory practices in how it has for example, given wedding planners the power to turn same-sex couples away. Just the year prior, Pence was blasted for saying that Indiana would refuse to recognize same-sex marriages, after the law preventing such ceremonies, was overturned.
