A docuseries on the Ku Klux Klan called, "Generation KKK," is set to premiere on January 10th, 2017, on A&E. The show will focus on four families in the KKK, and individuals in those families who are trying to break free of the Klan.
The show has already generated a great deal of controversy, as many commentators have argued that giving the KKK a national platform could potentially normalize its racist attitudes. Melanie McFarland, in an article for Salon, wrote, "At some point we'll have to ask ourselves whether a show like this is fighting white supremacy or normalizing it."
The general manager of A&E, Rob Sharenow, has made it clear that they do not intend for the show to be a platform for the KKK's hateful rhetoric. "We certainly didn't want the show to be seen as a platform for the views of the KKK," he said.
Although production on "Generation KKK" started over a year ago, it will premiere during a period that has a seen a spike in hate crimes following the election of Donald Trump.
