President-elect Donald Trump confirmed Monday morning that he has tapped retired neurosurgeon and former presidential-hopeful Ben Carson to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities," Trump said.  "Ben shares my optimism about the future of our country and is part of ensuring that this is a Presidency representing all Americans."

Last month, Carson said he was not interested in a Trump cabinet position, so his acceptance of the nomination represents a drastic change of heart.  When asked about his qualifications for the position, he said, "I grew up in the inner city and have spent a lot of time there, and have dealt with a lot of patients from that area and recognize that we cannot have a strong nation if we have weak inner cities."
