Authorities have identified the suspect in the shooting death of former NFL running back Joe McKnight to be Ronald Gasser of Gretna, Louisiana.

Based off of witness accounts the deadly encounter between Knight and Gasser is so far being called the result of a road rage incident. An investigation into whether there was any ulterior motive to the Thursday afternoon [December 1] incident, is ongoing. Gasser, a 54-year-old white male, is described to have been a loner, with neighbors stating that they don't recall much of anybody else ever leaving his residence. He is reported to have been educated at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, and is the self-employed owner of a registered plumbing company and a telecommunications consultancy business.

Witnesses have told of a dispute breaking out in traffic on the Terrytown street, with one claiming to have heard McKnight "trying to apologize" following a shouting bout. According to a witness who professed to have seen the incident unfold, Gasser fired a bullet into McKnight, then moved in to fire another while standing over him. "I told you not to f**k with me," he is reported to have then said.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate McKnight, but were unsuccessful. Gasser remained composed at the scene, where he waited for police, and handed in his gun before submitting himself for questioning. According to McKnight's father, the 28-year-old former New York Jets player had recently received a call to return to the field in the interest of helping the Minnesota Vikings remedy their ailing backfield.
