An Italian mother received 30 years in prison for murdering her 8-year-old son after she claims he witnessed her having an affair with the boy's grandfather.

The woman, Veronica Panarello, strangled the boy with electric cables and left him for dead in a remote gully in Santa Croce, Sicily. The body was discovered back in 2014 and at the time she claimed that her son was abducted on the way to school. CCTV released footage to police that made them strongly question the woman’s claim, according to the Daily Mail. Panarello was eventually found guilty and confessed to the murder during the trial. She blamed the crime on her husband’s father, Andrea Stival, whom she claims helped her carry out the murder because the boy caught his mother having sex with the grandfather.

Stival denies that he helped Panarello carry out the murder and is threatening to sue her for slander. “It is just another lie of that crazy woman,” said Stival. “That accusation is something completely out of this world. I went mad for my grandson, my little angel. Now there’s a need for peace and justice. My stomach turned upside down downgrading a grandfather’s love.” Still, police are investigating Stival as an accessory to murder, according to Italian media. Panarello’s husband has since filed for divorce and is asking for two million euro in compensation.
