A man from Arlington, Virginia was arrested less than a mile away from Mother Emanuel [the Charleston, NC church where Dylann Roof gunned down nine worshipers in 2015], after he initiated a racist confrontation with award winning journalist Steve Crump, recently. Crump had been covering the arrival of Hurricane Matthew when he was stopped in his tracks, upon hearing 21-year-old Brian Eybers shout "What are you doing here?" Eybers, who had been recording himself on his iPad, then began narrating the interaction by documenting "a black guy walking around here, no he's a slave, no he's a n****r."

“I went from zero to 60 like that,” Crump told the Charlotte Observer of his immediate reaction to Eybers' remark. Crump and his WBTV cameraman continued to film as he retracted his steps to confront the man, as he sat preparing to smoke. When asked to repeat what he had just said, Eybers spells it out, before defending that it was his Constitutional right to make the comment. Crump challenged that if he knew the Constitution so well, he would have recalled the 9th and 14th Amendments before using his own rights to trump the rights of another citizen. "You're a f***ing idiot. You're ignorant. So you really are a n****r than. You're acting n****rly," Eybers replied.

Eybers would continue on with his snide comebacks, at one point stating that Crump doesn't have the same rights that he does because he doesn't want him to, and affirming that he is indeed superior, before the confrontation escalated beyond words. When Crump returned to his news van to leave, Eybers followed, saying that he wasn't ready to leave, and positioning himself on front of the vehicle to restrict it from going anywhere. Police would arrive within moments of Crump calling to report Eybers for harassment.

Eybers would admit to having used racial slurs and was cuffed after he was reportedly found with crack. He was taken to Charleston County Detention Center where he was booked on charges of disorderly conduct, congregating for an unlawful purpose, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
